Magical Arrays

Arrays are magic items that are fixed to items, locations, or even people and offer a number of potential benefits ranging from wards to improved healing, to other more unique effects. Arrays come in five categories: personal, affixed, room, building, and city. These categories affect the cost and range of an effect, which are positively correlated.

Magical arrays also come in three flavors: Static, Invested, and Soul Imbued.

  • A static magical array is one designed to be used by anyone. No magical talent is necessary, just the instructions for activation. These tend to either have the weakest effects, or cost the largest amount of gold to create.

  • An Invested magical array is one that can only be activated by a source of magic, such as Mana or Grace. These items are idle until enough magic has been dumped into them to make them function. Sometimes that can be built up over time, but usually it is an all-at-once investment.

  • A Soul Imbued Array is one that the craftsman left a piece of their soul in during the item creation process. Any amount of Soul can be invested into a magical array (reducing the crafter’s SOUL attribute by the same amount). If the amount invested is equal to the total SOUL the crafter has, they die during the item creation process and increase the soul power of the item substantially. While an item is imbued with soul, the craftsman cannot gain it back by any means other than the consumption (if applicable), destruction, or disjunction of the array. For this reason, Soul Imbued Arrays are typically vastly stronger than their static or invested counterparts.
